LGBTQIA+ Rights & Reproductive Justice

LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and/or Ally.

Despite the enormous need, LGBTQIA+ people are frequently left out of conversations on “reproductive rights.”

LGBTQIA+ justice, including gender-affirming healthcare, may be another area of limited (if any) prior training.
The Collective commits to upholding a safe space to learn, grow, and share as we prioritize an attitude of humility in what we do not yet know.

We recommend reading Medicaid as an LGBTQ Reproductive Justice Issue: A Primer.

The Primer is a joint project of the National Health Law Program, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, and the National LGBTQ Task Force. All* Above All also contributed to the section on the Hyde Amendment.

Key take-aways from this resource:

  • Transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people are directly hurt by the Hyde Amendment.

    • LGBTQIA+ people are 3x as likely to have a household income under $10,000, and therefore more likely to rely on Medicaid for healthcare and be unable to afford abortion out of pocket

    • LGBTQIA+ people are 3x as likely to be unemployed, and therefore more likely to rely on Medicaid for healthcare and be unable to afford abortion out of pocket

  • Unplanned pregnancies are equally as common for cisgender lesbian and bisexual women as they are for cisgender heterosexual women

  • On average, poverty rates are higher among those more likely to need access to abortion care, including lesbian and bisexual women, transgender men, and nonbinary and gender nonconforming people assigned female as birth
